25 Things About "Dr. Bert"

In response to the challenge by The Gazz Man and after being “tagged” by Glenn, here is a brief list of things about me that may or may not be interesting to anyone. But I certainly found much of it interesting as I was making it happen.

1. My favorite animal has always been the tiger. I don’t want to own one, and I don’t think anyone should keep them as pets. I did, however, finally realize a life-long dream to pet one. In 1995, a local furniture store known for its exotic commercials which often featured tigers, lions and other wild animals, held a weekend “Pet the Tiger” promotion to get people into the store.
2. I’m grossed out by worms and cockroaches, but I think snakes and spiders are cool. I once let a 6-foot boa constrictor slither into my jacket, where it rested comfortably from one sleeve to the other. Another snake I “held” was a 15-foot python that weighed 90 lbs. Both snakes were youngsters, not fully grown.
3. I started a rescue shelter in 2002 and handled several hundred dogs and close to 1,000 cats. Many were rehomed, but many could not be, due to human irresponsibility, such as abuse, neglect and apathy. Some were not able to be rehabilitated, some died from disease, and some “aged out,” that is, they lived out the rest of their lives at the shelter. 4. I enjoy writing and have written one physical book and about a dozen ebooks, plus many articles.
5. I was the only girl in high school who could run around the track, and I jogged a couple of miles every morning before school… back in the days before there were any sports programs for girls, and long before anyone started calling it jogging. (I also graduated number 23 in my class of 767.)
6. I love horses and spent a great deal of time as a teenager drawing them, since I couldn’t ride as often as I wanted to. Never owned one, but I had a friend who had a ranch and we rode in the official Pony Express Reride every year. When I got my 15-year pin, my friend retired and sold his horses, so that ended that.
7. I met Ed in 1982, but he didn’t ask me out until 1992. The rest is history. We are soul mates.
8. I lived on a sail boat for a couple of years (a 35-foot sloop).
9. Everyone is weird by someone’s definition. I’m even weird by my own.
10. I’m a chiropractor. I retired after 25 years of mostly unappreciated work, but for those who cooperated and got well, it was worth it. But it was more than a job or career. It’s a lifestyle, not a crisis management tool, as medicine is. Most people my age are either on meds, or dead. I’m not. :)
11. As a news reporter, I met heads of state and many celebrities — Mel Tillis, Kitty Wells, George Jones, Janie Fricke, Eddie Rabbitt, Marie Osmond, Debbie Reynolds, Buddy Hackett, and others I can’t think of at the moment. I learned that politicians just think they are celebrities and I’m hard-pressed to remember their names now.
12. I’ve seen a moonbow and the green flash. A moonbow is a rainbow at night. No color spectrum, as it’s illuminated by the moon, so it’s white. The green flash can be seen when the sun makes its final dip over the horizon on a calm sea. But do not blink. You will miss it.
13. I was a ham radio operator for 15 years but let my ticket expire when the government decided license holders should have background checks. Too much Big Brother, so no thanks. My background may be boring, but it’s still MY private life to reveal when and what I choose.
14. I climbed a mountain with a sprained ankle. I didn’t want to disappoint the group I was with and I didn’t want to miss the experience, either. It ruined my ankle, of course, and I later broke it when I crashed my motorcyle. I sold that bike to buy my first marketing course for 5 G’s.
15. I’ve been on 4 cattle drives in Wyoming and Colorado and chronicled one of them for the Denver Post newspaper and another one for a large real estate company that rewards their best agents with a yearly adventure.
16. I used to teach clog dancing.
17. I also used to teach English as a second language in an adult education program.
18. I was on the local planning commission for 15 years.
19. I built my own garage, completely alone… no men allowed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYBtHwPsZRM
20. I carried the official Olympic Torch in 1996, by horseback.
21. I am a certified piano tuner, but can’t play anywhere near as well as the tuners I remember from my childhood.
22. I have visited all but 10 of the states in the U.S. and have lived in 10 of them. Have also traveled Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Europe.
23. I’ve been a waitress, a go-go girl, a delivery driver, a chauffeur, dental technician, seamstress, cook, electrician’s helper, and a network administrator for a public library.
24. I was homeless for 2 years and lived in my truck. It was my choice, as I wanted to see what it’s like to have nothing and nowhere to go. Certainly not as complete an experience as one who lives that way by chance and not choice, but revealing nevertheless.
25. I was an avid square dancer and even became president of a local club for 3 years. But I lost my partner when my husband passed away. Ed is not into dancing. But I’m too busy preparing for success with the marketing to be dancing now anyway. I’ll dance later… when Ed retires and is available.
